In the project “VINKRYPTOR” between KIT, FZI, and Mercedes-Benz, a method for the pseudonymization of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) has been developed. The VIN is a unique identifier that is widely used to associate telemetry data with vehicles. Being personally identifiable information, it needs to be protected accordingly. Mercedes-Benz needed a solution that was both provably secure and practically efficient and that could be integrated into the existing infrastructure. Researchers from KIT and FZI proposed a scheme that satisfied this requirement, conducting a security proof, a quantitative security analysis as well as a review of the implementation. VINKRYPTOR was deemed to be legally compliant by Mercedes-Benz’s legal department and is now used by several teams.
