Hardware-based Cryptography

KIT has collaborated with IBM Deutschland Research & Development for many years on research about hardware-based cryptography. This includes, e.g., the (then) world’s fastest approach for private set intersection. This was achieved using a combination of performant cryptographic building blocks and secure enclaves, which did not need to be fully trusted anymore. Security is maintained even in the presence of side-channels as well as leakage of the enclave to an external party, for example the manufacturer. KASTEL represented KIT at the Lindau Nobel Laureate Forum in 2023 with a demonstrator showing this work with use-cases for medical data. Based on this result, IBM and KIT collaborated on the development of the “cryptographic enclave”, which will be continued.
